Dear Mom
Before I start I want to say if this letter is illegible it's because I'm laying in bed on my back writing this. I got a letter from you today post marked the 19th. I can't believe it, you didn't ask one question. So you saw Ann, eh - I'd sure like to see her again. I haven't written to Roy in fact I don't write to any one unless I hear from them. Tell Unk I'm still working on his letter. So Son finishes in June, eh - that means he won't see action until next November and I'll have the war over by then. The news was pretty good today - maybe it won't last all winter after all. It was quite dreary today, rain and dampness, even had fog this morning - it's raining now in fact, everything is mud and goo. When it rains we can't see the show cause it's out in the open.
You know when we were in Rome we didn't know our way around so when ever we went any where we always took a taxi. The taxies were horse drawn carts - they had red wheels and black bodies with a top that could be put up when it rained. There is room for two and then there's a little seat where an extra person can sit. When we took them there were always four and sometimes five. They are more fun - you don't go too fast and you can flirt with the girls on the sidewalks. We stayed in a nice hotel and I had good food. It cost $1.50 a day which was food and bed. The Army has taken over the hotel but the owner still runs it. How we got to Rome was amusing. Mac and I got a three day pass to Naples along with our crew. Our squadron has a Villa there where the boys stay. Well since we've been there twice before as soon as we landed we started hitch hiking to Rome. We got a ride in a truck all the way to the Coliseum in Rome. In order to get a room in Rome you have to be on orders. Well, we weren't on any orders so we stayed with Dan and another guy who had gone up the day before on orders. We stayed with them for two nights and got a room for ourself the last night. Coming back to Naples we got a ride all the way in a command car so we were pretty lucky. I guess all there is left to see if Pompei. Well that's about all for tonight - your package hasn't arrived as yet. Well give my love to everyone - say did Roy ever take Ruth Jean out?
That's all for now.
Love, Rae
