March Thursday 25, 1943

Well, talk about a lazy man's life, that's me. We've done nothing all day long. We got up this morning at 7 AM, went to breakfast and then came back to the gym. I then went on sick call. My right eye was inflamed so I had it washed. It didn't hurt or anything it just looked bad in the mirror so I had it looked at. We went over to the doctor's office at 9 AM and I got back at 11:30 AM. Boy did I wait, there were 31 men at sick call, mostly for colds. Mine's just about gone. We went to lunch at 12:40 and came back and then we went to town in shifts. They took three shifts and allowed you about 40 minutes in town. They marched us there and back. Boy it sure is small. It has a square and the whole town is around the square. I bought some laundry and face soap plus a pocket book, edition of Lost Horizon. After I came back from town I laid around some more doing nothing. Tonight we will go to chow, in 2 hours, and then do nothing all evening. Lights go out at 22:30. I sure hope school starts soon so I have something to do. This inactivity is felt more when you're confined. It's just like prison. But when school starts I think everything will be OK. I'll be so busy I won't have time to wish I could go to town. Well, I'm afraid my letters will be short until we start doing something. There are lots of girls but you can't get close to them. You view them from a distance. The town is so small the only thing you could do would be go to the show. Even though it seems like a prison I still like it. You asked who Mrs. Kochler was, well, Dick and Paul Kochler were the boys sharing our cabin up at camp. I'm sure you met her, I know Aunt Elsie did. Our new CO is Cpt. Bain and our Adj. is Leut. Trammell. Well, that's all to tell so I'll close. Pa, can you hear rolling on the next bunk as you read this.

Love,
Rae
