Today was a easy day for a change. We drilled for a couple of hours this morning and then went to a lecture. There sure was a beautiful sunrise this morning. I watched it for about a half an hour out on the drill field while we were waiting for drilling to start. The sunrises here are always pretty but this was really beautiful. The sky was overcast with small clouds and they looked like gold. On the horizon and off to the east and west was the most delicate purple I have ever seen. It was a dark purple where the sun was coming up and then it faded to the north and south. Through breaks in the clouds the sky was a pale green. As it got lighter the gold color clouds increased in color. Just before the sun showed the entire east looked like a wall of highly polished gold. It sure were purtty. Our lecture was on first aid and hygene. I learned more first aid in one hour than you could possibly learn in a civilian course of a couple of weeks. We saw a movie of first aid given to soldiers in battle. The men were actually wounded under fire and the first aid was carried out under fire. The movie was a navy one and the action was on a ship. One of the fellows passed out from seeing the bleeding. After the lecture we went to chow. After chow we had a shot and vaxcination. The shot was another typhoyd one and the vax. was for small pox. you don't feel the shot when you get it but my arm sure is sore now. I can hardly raise it above my head. After the shot we had the afternoon off until retreat. I got Bud's and Sonny's letters tonight. Bud said hello to you. I need a sewing kit, mainly different colored threads. My white sox have a hole in them. If you could find a fountain pen somewhere my letters wouldn't be so messy. I don't think I need anything else. Did I ask for a shoe kit? I don't remember if I did.
There's a dance tonight for the unattached men, ones who have already finished their basic training, and for the cadets. You can tell the cadets rate first down here. We get better deals in supply and more attention in training. One thing I know is that we won't be here long. Maybe a month. Cadets have been known to have been shipped after 14 days here. But I think we will get at least a month. Tomorrow is inspection so I guess I'd better close and prepare. I'm going to shave, shower, and ____. I'll tell you about inspection tomorrow.
Love,
Rae
